reached an agreement to reverse the fiscal cliff. abc's jonathan karl reports on the details from washington. >> reporter: at long last, they finally have a deal. late last night, vice president biden went to capitol hill to convince senate democrats to pass it. >> i think we'll get a very good vote tonight, but happy new year. >> reporter: after a quick debate, the senate even passed it. >> the bill as amended is passed. >> reporter: now the big question, can it pass in the house? technically everybody's taxes have already gone up. the tax cuts have expired. but if the bill can pass in the house in the next day or two, the tax cuts can be made retroactive. the bill, if it passes, would extend tax cuts for all workers earning under $400,000. it would prevent a big tax hike estates values at less than $5 million and it would extend unemployment benefits set to expire today for some 2 million people. even as they closed in on that deal yesterday, congressional republicans were not happy with what they heard from president obama who held a campaign-style event at the white house. >>

effort to try to keep the country from falling off the fiscal cliff, sending everybody's taxes up and possibly sending the country into another recession. it's down to the wire with just three days left. and abc's lisa stark has the latest on the last-minute wheeling and dealing being done in washington. good morning, lisa. >> reporter: good morning, bianna. well, the next 24 hours are critical. the president this morning in his radio address, told lawmakers don't let washington politics get in the way of american progress. so, today, the last-ditch attempt to put together a deal is under way. and the ball is in the senate's court. there's nothing like a deadline to force action. the president met with congressional leaders friday for the first time in six weeks. then, proclaimed himself modestly optimistic. but warned -- >> the american people are watching what we do here. obviously, their patience is already thin. >> reporter: with the clock running out, here's the game plan. the democratic and republican leaders in the senate will spend today trying to hash out a bipartisan agreeme

moments. >>> this morning, both sides, now, looming, four days from the fiscal cliff. everybody's taxes will be going up if we go over it. drastic budget cuts will be going into effect. and leaders in washington have finally agreed to talk. a meeting scheduled this afternoon at the white house. abc's chief white house correspondent, jonathan karl, telling us what we can expect. we want to take a listen to sound from both sides. the looks of things, no one may be getting too far down the road. first, let's listen to what senate minority leader mitch mcconnell said on the senate floor. >> i told the president we'd be happy to look at what he proposes. but the truth is, we're coming up against a hard deadline here. and republicans aren't going to write a blank check for anything senate democrats put forward just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff. >> meanwhile, the senate majority leader, now, had even harshe harsher words for gop leadership. >> the house of representatives is operating out the house of representatives. it's being operated with a dictatorship of the speaker

morning, cutting his hawaii vacation short because of the looming fiscal cliff deadline. it is now just five days away. is there any movement on either side? how many more times can we ask this question of abc chief white house correspondent, jonathan karl, joining us this morning. dare i ask, where we stand this morning? >> reporter: good news and bad news. the president's coming back to washington. the senate's coming back. they're ready to strike a deal. the bad news, josh, no progress whatsoever. and, in fact, the treasury department said that the government on monday will hit the limit of how much money we can borrow to run the government. they're going to do some extraordinary measures to keep us going until february. but things look grim. the one sliver of good news i can say on the substance is, the speaker's office tells me this morning there has been contact between the speaker of the house and the president, at least on the staff level. and they won't say whether or not the two men actually spoke. >> contact. hazahs all around. we heard a lot about taxes that will increa

morning, everyone. we begin with that fiscal cliff hanger in washington, d.c. there are now just two days left until automatic tax hikes and severe budget cuts go into effect the. the president is urging democrats and republicans to reach a deal. senate leaders are working on a last-minute compromise. >>> a horrific accident in mississippi. six people including five children were killed when their suv plunged into a creek yesterday. the children were all related. police say four other adults including the parents of those children managed to escape. the vehicle that caused that accident is under investigation. >>> and stunning video of a plane crash outside of moscow, russia, the passenger plane overshot the runway and slammed into a highway yesterday. amazing video. four of the eight crew members on board were killed. there were no passengers on the plane and no one on the highway was hurt. the cause of that crash is under investigation. >>> and finally, a celebration at the vatican. about 40,000 young pilgrims from all across europe attended an open air mass conducted by pope bened
